Hello! One 11 Studios is a boutique agency that specializes in design, branding and social media growth for lifestyle brands and female entrepreneurs. We strive to make you and your business sparkle online! From branding development, graphic and web design, and social media growth and strategy…we've got you covered!
When you are first starting out in your business, you might not have the funds to hire a copywriter just yet – I get it! But you still need website copy that speaks to your readers and converts them into clients. Sounds like a tall ask, right? It doesn’t have to be. Here are five starting points for writing your website copy, even if you aren’t a writer! Trust me; I’ve used these tips myself.
Before you write anything, you need to brainstorm and develop exactly who you are and what your brand represents. How do you want to come across as a brand? Do you provide legal services and therefore want to be seen as serious, respectable, formal, and professional in your field? Or is your brand more casual, witty, honest, and relatable? Find the tone that personifies you and your brand and stick with it! This tone can show up everywhere from your menu items to your CTA’s. Just remember to keep your tone consistent across your webpage.
Establishing your ideal customer or reader is vital in writing your website copy – because you will be talking directly to them with your words. You might have heard it called an Avatar or ideal client – but regardless of what it’s called, you should know who this “avatar” is almost as well as you know yourself. What dreams do they have? What makes them smile? What keeps them awake at night?
Knowing what makes your avatar tick will help you write directly to them. You can easily reach your audience through words and topics that interest them, charm them, and persuade them that they need what you offer. Really understand who you are writing to and envision them when you do it.
Sure, you want to let your audience know how awesome you are, but don’t let that overshadow the benefits your AUDIENCE gets when they work with you. Try not to write about all the amazing awards you’ve received, everything you’ve accomplished, and why you are great.
Instead, write about how you can solve your audience’s problems. How can all those awards and accomplishments help THEM in their business or life? Remember, you are here to serve your customers or clients – so tell them exactly how you can do that in your website copy.
I could talk about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) until I am blue in the face. That’s because it is SO important! Optimizing your copy using keywords is another way of letting Google know that your website is legit and to feature it in search results.
By creating SEO-friendly web pages, you are setting yourself up for a steady stream of traffic coming in from Google when they search for those keywords that you are frequently writing about. What are your avatars or ideal customers searching for? Use those words in your web copy (but remember, don’t keyword-stuff your copy)!
You might think you are finally done after you’ve drafted, tweaked, keyword researched, and perfected your copy. Wrong! You absolutely need to edit and proofread your copy. I promise you, no draft is perfect on the first (or even second) go around. We all make mistakes – especially grammatical and spelling mistakes. There is no shame in that!
Leaving these mistakes, errors, or typos in your copy can actually make your brand lose credibility with your audience. Imagine if you were a copywriter with spelling mistakes in your website copy. That doesn’t exactly scream “Hire ME!” for your copywriting services.
Editing your copy also helps you create a more engaging and fluid copy, so your audience is persuaded by your credibility and want to start working with you ASAP! This includes making sure your copy is scannable (think headlines and bullet points) and simplifying your text’s readability.
While these are only starting points, they should drastically help your webpage copy as you start your writing process. Don’t worry about perfection (except for proofreading!), just follow these steps and get your content out there. You can always tweak and edit as you build and grow your business. Because eventually, you’ll want to start adding blog posts (which I highly recommend doing!), too. When you are more established and are making that money, maybe then you can hire a copywriter.
