When you start out as an entrepreneur, one of the first pieces of advice you’ll come across is to find or pick a niche. This means you need to 1) choose the specific type of person you want to serve or 2) choose a specific type of service you want to offer. While this is certainly good advice, it’s important to know exactly why you should choose a niche and the benefits of having one in your business.
Some entrepreneurs take this a step further and niche down on both #1 and #2, which is also known as micro-niching. But let’s rewind a little, shall we?
Let’s quickly define what a niche is. According to Business News Daily, a “niche is a specialized or focused area of a broader market that businesses can serve to differentiate themselves from the competition.”
And “niche” isn’t the only word you’ll come across when people talk about this. A lot of entrepreneurs will use the buyer persona, target audience, ideal customer, or customer avatar.
A good example of niching down is a Social Media Manager that specifically helps fitness and yoga instructors on their Instagram marketing. Technically speaking, they could help any business with their Instagram marketing – because they have that skill set. But by niching down and serving only fitness and yoga instructors, they differentiate themselves from the other thousands of Social Media Managers out there and show their ideal customer (fitness & yoga instructors) that they are pros in their niche market.
So, now that we know what a niche is, how will having a niche benefit your business?
Establishing a niche market for your services allows you to create and send targeted messages that speak directly to your ideal customer. Your marketing efforts have everything to do with WHO you are talking to. Because not everyone is your ideal client.
As an entrepreneur, you have a message you are trying to share. Contrary to what you might think – you don’t want to talk to the masses. If you serve fitness coaches, real estate agents, food bloggers, and web designers – your message cannot speak directly to all of those groups. You are trying to talk to too many audiences! When you talk to everyone, you stand the chance of talking to no one at all.
When you niche down on who you are speaking to (your target market), you can cater your message to hit on their specific pain points and offer specific results that they want in their business.
With a niche or specialization, you are setting your business apart from your competition. Why would your ideal client choose a service provider that tries to serve everyone under the sun when they can choose you: someone who specializes in working with customers or businesses just like theirs. That alone will set you apart and make your services more desirable to your ideal client.
When you choose a niche, you are better able to find and connect with your target market exactly where they are. Sure, your target audience might be in a few of the Facebook groups for general women entrepreneurs. But speaking to them in those groups would be like yelling across a packed football stadium.
You need to place yourself in a small room filled with your target market to talk directly to them. If you serve fitness & yoga coaches – join the Facebook Groups out there for fitness coaches and yoga teachers. Scout out local fitness or yoga studios in your community and start reaching out to them.
Once you start specializing within your niche market, you have a distinct sales advantage for your service or product. Potential clients want to work with service providers that get shit done and produce real results. When you’ve proven – time and again – that you can do this for clients in a specific niche, you will stand out as an expert in your field.
Because you work with a certain clientele or provide specific services, you are showing your expertise and skill in that niche. I can’t tell you how beneficial and powerful that is for your business reputation. Once your reputation grows, your niche market will start gravitating towards you like a moth to a flame.
I hope this post helps you understand why choosing a niche is beneficial for your business and can help you scale and grow your business into exactly what you want it to be.
If you have any questions and are unsure how to niche down your target market, send me a message! I’d love to help.
